Saima's Review: Skin Food Watery Berry Range

Hey Guys,

I recently posted about some products and samples that I got when I went to Malaysia and I felt like something was missing... turns out that I completely missed out one of my sample sets:

~ The Skin Food Watery Berry Range Sample Set ~

(It was hiding in between other samples in my sample drawer hahaa)

So the lady in the Skin Food store was telling me about both the Watery Berry Range and the Omija Whitening Range and I was intrigued by both so she gave me a few samples so that I can try them at home to see which I prefer.

(I will be reviewing the Omija Whitening Range samples in a separate post)

Sample Set Contents:

The Watery Berry samples were neatly packed together in a clear packaging, and the sales advisor told me to use them in the order that they were packed in, which is:

1) Skin Food Watery Berry Toner

2) Skin Food Watery Berry Serum

3) Skin Food Watery Berry Emulsion

4) Skin Food Watery Berry Blending Cream

The back of the samples are all in Korean so I had to check the Skin Food website to know more about each product and how to use it.

1) Skin Food Watery Berry Toner

Product Description:

According to the Skin Food website this toner is:

"A dewy moisture toner that promotes soft, glowing skin with berry extracts and hyaluronic acid."

Skin Food also explains the benefits of the berry extracts and hyaluronic acid, and shares a short little story for each:

"Berries Story: Cloudberries, lingonberries, and raspberries from Lapland, a region famous for its Santa Claus Village, provide superior antioxidant properties.

Hyaluronic Acid Story: Hyaluronic acid holds up to 30 times its weight in water, transforming dry skin into a soft, glowing texture."

I wasn't able to take a swatch picture of the toner as it absorbs into the skin very quickly but it's pretty much the same watery consistency as other toners.

I don't like using a cotton pad when applying products (especially toners) as I feel like I am wasting a lot of the product... in my opinion it is much better to pour an ample amount into clean palms and pat/ smooth it over the face.

Anyways, after cleansing my skin I proceeded to use the toner which smells really good .... like fresh sweet berries but to be completely honest I wasn't very impressed with the product itself. Like I said above, the consistency is watery like a lot of other toners out there, which is fine, but once it was on my face it felt a little bit sticky and I really dislike having any sort of uncomfortable sticky feeling to my face. Not only the sticky feeling, but I noticed a slight bitter taste when I licked my lips. I think the only thing I really liked about this toner was the berry smell.

2) Skin Food Watery Berry Serum

Product Description:

According to the Skin Food website this serum is:

"A dewy moisture serum that promotes soft, glowing skin with berry extracts and hyaluronic acid."
(hhhmmm isn't that exactly what they said about the toner?)

After using the toner I applied the serum which is a clear gel like consistency... I managed to swatch this so I can show you guys what it looks like:

The product had quite a nice scent to it... same as the fresh sweet berry scent of the toner.

After reading what Skin Food say about the product, it made me think that it was just going to be the same as the toner, so I wasn't expecting anything good at all.

I smoothed the serum on to my face and to my surprise I actually liked it. It felt really light on the skin with no stickiness at all. My skin also felt very soft once it had all absorbed. The only downside is that it does have the same slight bitterness to it as the toner.
Will I buy the product in future? probably not as I'm not much of a serum person... but atleast it was better than the toner :)

3) Skin Food Watery Berry Emulsion

Product Description:

So once again, according to the Skin Food website this emulsion is:

"A dewy moisture emulsion that promotes soft, glowing skin with berry extracts and hyaluronic acid."

(yup just change one word each time ... haiiiiiii)

Here's the swatch that I took for you to see:

The emulsion also has the same scent as the toner and serum.

And again, not expecting much but there might be some hope for it as the serum did seem to be nice....

hhhmmm nah ... the emulsion was just ok for me ... not blah ... and not wow ... just ... ok.

The application was smooth but not as light as the serum, and the bitterness just seems to be building up after each product :(

4) Skin Food Watery Berry Blending Cream

Finally something interesting out of the whole sample pack.

Product Description:

For some reason this product is not listed on the official Skin Food website... no idea why as I haven't heard of it being discontinued or anything and I did see the actual product in the Skin Food store that I got the sample from.

I'm guessing they would just say the following anyway if it was on the website:

"A dewy moisture blending cream that promotes soft, glowing skin with berry extracts and hyaluronic acid." (LOL)

Anyway, jokes aside, I did actually remember the sales advisor saying that this cream should brighten and soften the skin while giving plenty of moisture, and something about blending the gel and cream parts together and applying it to the skin like you would a regular moisturiser.  She also said that it has to be a 2:1 ratio (the 2 being the gel and the 1 being the cream)

I assume the gel is for hydration and the cream is for nourishment, to give the skin some sort of complete long lasting moisture.

The product is a two part cream/gel which is meant to be mixed together before applying.

The cream is actually quite thick (I don't usually like thick creams) but it thins down slightly when mixed with the gel.

Once again, it smells the same as the rest of the range.

The application felt smooth/ hydrating to my skin and it smelt really fresh. It wasn't sticky or greasy in anyway but I do think the sample contained too much product for my face so it took quite some time to fully absorb into my skin, even after continuously massaging it in (I guess a little goes a long way)

I don't think the cream is amazing enough to repurchase but was nice for the one off use. The whole blending idea was interesting... a little time consuming but still fun if you're not in a rush.

Now for the downside... and this is a big downside... and I bet you know exactly what I'm going to say .... It is bitter! ... and don't get me wrong I'm not like tasting each product on purpose and definitely do not suggest consuming this or any other non edible product, but seriously... if a product accidentally gets on to your lips while massaging your face and after a while you subconsciously lick your lips ... it shouldn't.. and I mean it really shouldn't, have a bitter taste... and it certainly shouldn't get worse as you apply each of the products from the range... it's completely off putting.

Overall Impression:

I do really love Skin Food but this range was not for me, especially because of the whole bitter taste thing... they should really do something about that.

*Notes: You do not have to use the toner, serum, emulsion and cream all in one go and it's all down to personal preference and skin type. I would advise using a toner after cleansing and then just choosing either one of the serum, emulsion or cream depending on how much moisture your skin needs and also on your skin type.

If you have combination oily/ dehydrated skin which is prone to breakouts (like mine) I definitely do not recommend using all of them together, as I did notice quite a few break outs the next day ... too much for my poor skin to handle :(

*As I don't have the full size products of these samples I can't give a clear account as to how beneficial or how effective the products are over time. This is only a general review on one off use.

*Disclaimer: I received these free samples to try, after purchasing products for my own personal use. Everything written above is my own personal opinion of the product. I am not affiliated with any company and have not been paid to write reviews.
